We’ve been producing precision engineering solutions for southern industries since 1971.
McLeay Precision Engineering was originally owned by the McLeay family, merging with Melhop Engineering in the late 1980s.
Originally situated on the corner of Leet and Kelvin Streets, the company then moved to the corner of Spey and Bond Streets and then to its present location at 6 Spey St.
In 1999 workshop manager Jelle Keizer and company estimator Vic Boyington took over the reins - owning and operating the company in partnership for the next decade.
During this time Vic and Jelle began to invest in the CNC machine technology that keeps the company at the forefront of innovation.
They retired in 2009, selling the business to well-known Southland businessman and Burt Munro Rally Chairman Wayne Affleck, who changed the name to MPE Ltd.
Wayne continued to invest in the latest technology and worked towards further diversifying MPE Ltd’s client base.
Wayne’s passion and determination was legendary, and following his passing in August 2018, the company has continued to deliver precision engineering solutions.
Wayne’s connection to The Burt Munro Challenge was honoured with the introduction of the Affleck Maverick Trophy in 2019.
In early 2020, Chris Hughes, who has 25 years experience in the engineering industry, took the helm as business manager and then in 2021 became the Managing Director after he and his wife Jade took a shareholding in the business.
2021, marked 50 years in business which is testament to the founders and those who have owned the business over time, and with more exciting innovations on the horizon the future looks very bright for MPE.

We are professional engineers who excel at what we do. We’re driven by belief, passion and process, to get the job done right, first time and on time. Our experienced team pride themselves on perfection using the latest in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) equipment in conjunction with traditional lathes, mills and welding equipment.
Our engineers specialise in all facets of CNC milling and turning, laser cutting, gear cutting, metal spraying and heat treatment processes for producing parts and consumables.
We love what we do and pride ourselves on delivering precision solutions to keep industry turning. Our team works in a collaborative way to ensure out customers get the best possible results – always focusing on the outcome.
Introducing Managing Director -
Chris Hughes
Born and raised in Southland, married with 5 girls, I’ve worked in the region for most of my career, apart from a two-year secondment in Auckland.
My industry experience includes working for a large corporate company in senior management positions, and then as Managing Director for a medium-sized engineering business, achieving significant growth and diversification in the business.
I perform volunteer work alongside other business organisations in the South for the benefit of all businesses as well as having a focus on Southland’s youth and their future. I am committed to the growth of the future generations of our people and also Southland as a whole so that we may be even more prosperous as a province.
I’m delighted to be leading the team here at MPE Ltd, continuing to push the boundaries on what is achieveable to deliver finely-tuned solutions for industry throughout the south.
